Restoring a Landmark: Hebrew Tabernacle, Washington Heights
Shape Metalworks was proud to be part of the restoration of the Hebrew Tabernacle, a historic Reform Jewish synagogue in Washington Heights. Originally built in 1932 as the Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist, this iconic domed structure was transformed into a synagogue in 1973 and stands today as a stunning example of Art Deco architecture.
Our team was tasked with restoring the first of three original sets of Art Deco doors—an intricate project that spanned six months. Working alongside a dedicated group of artisans, we brought decades-old craftsmanship back to life. The process included:
Careful deconstruction of the original doors, salvaging as many components as possible for reuse
Creation and fabrication of a brand-new door frame and jamb to match the historic design
Hardware updates to integrate modern functionality while maintaining period accuracy
Partnering with a professional mediablaster to carefully remove layers of aged patina
Collaborating with a skilled caster to recreate lost or damaged decorative elements
Coordinating with an expert plater to revive the brilliance of the original brass detailing
This project was not only a technical achievement but also a meaningful opportunity to help preserve the historic character and beauty of a beloved community landmark.
At Shape Metalworks, we take pride in combining traditional techniques with modern precision to deliver exceptional restoration work—ensuring that history is not only remembered but restored.
